The Short Answer: What is "Link in Bio"?
The phrase "link in bio" is a directional call-to-action. It tells the viewer to navigate away from the current post or video, go to the creator's main profile page (their "bio"), and click the clickable website URL located directly beneath their profile picture.
Why do people say it?
Unlike Facebook or X (Twitter), Instagram does not allow users to place clickable links directly inside the captions of regular photo or video posts. If I type www.google.com in my photo caption, it will render as plain black text. You cannot tap it.
Instagram designed the app this way intentionally to keep users scrolling on the platform, rather than constantly clicking away to external websites. Because creators cannot link directly below their photos, the only place Instagram allows a blue, clickable hyperlink is on the user's main profile page.
Therefore, whenever a creator is trying to sell a product, promote a YouTube video, or share a news article, they are forced to put the URL on their profile and write "Link in Bio" in the caption so you know where to go looking for it!
Where is the Link in Bio on Instagram?
It is incredibly easy to find once you know where to look. The location changes slightly depending on whether you are using your phone or a desktop computer.
1. Where to find it on the Mobile App (iPhone & Android)
- When you see a post that says "link in bio", tap on the username or profile picture of the person who posted it. (This sits at the top left of their photo/video).
- This action will take you directly to their main profile grid.
- Look below their profile picture, their follower count, and their text description (their "bio").
- Right at the bottom of that text block, you will see a small chainlink icon next to a line of blue text. That is the link! Tap it to open their website.
2. Where to find it on Desktop / PC
- Click on the creator's username at the top of their post.
- On the desktop website, their profile is laid out horizontally.
- Look below their Bold Name and their descriptive text.
- You will see a bolded blue URL right above their grid of square photos. Click it with your mouse.
What does a "Link Tree" mean?
For a long time, Instagram only allowed users to have one single link in their bio. This was incredibly frustrating for influencers who wanted to link to their YouTube channel, their merch store, and their podcast all at the same time.
To fix this, third-party companies like Linktree were invented. When you click a "link in bio" today, it often takes you to a mini-website that acts as a menu or directory. This menu page contains 5 or 10 different buttons, allowing the creator to guide you to exactly the specific video or product they were talking about in their post.
(Note: In late 2023, Instagram officially changed the rules and now allows users to place up to 5 individual links natively in their bio!)
Is it Safe to Click on a Link in Bio?
Generally speaking, yes, clicking a link in a profile bio is relatively safe because Instagram utilizes an in-app browser. When you click a link, it doesn't open Safari or Chrome right away; instead, it opens inside Instagram's protective sandbox, which blocks many malicious downloads.
However, you must still practice basic internet safety:
- Never input passwords: If a link in bio asks you to "log in to Instagram again to verify your age", it is a phishing scam trying to steal your account! Close it immediately.
- Check the URL: Before buying a product, ensure the website looks legitimate and isn't a cheap knockoff site.
- Trust the creator: Only click links from creators you actually follow and trust, rather than spam bot accounts leaving comments.
